It’s easy to judge SEO by one thing: where you rank for a handful of keywords. But rankings can go up while the business sees nothing from it, and they can look flat while qualified leads are quietly climbing. If you want a real answer to “is this working,” you need to look past the rankings dashboard.
Start with the traffic that actually matters
Total organic traffic is a vanity number on its own. A spike in visits from a viral post or an irrelevant keyword doesn’t help you if none of those people are your customers. Instead, look at organic traffic to the pages that are supposed to drive business — service pages, location pages, product pages — and track that separately from blog or informational traffic.
Check impressions and clicks before you check position
Search Console shows you impressions (how often you showed up in search) and clicks (how often people actually visited) for each query. If impressions are climbing but clicks aren’t, your titles and descriptions may not be convincing anyone to click, even if you’re ranking. If neither is moving, the issue is usually that you’re not yet ranking on page one for the terms that matter.
Watch what happens after the click
Organic traffic that doesn’t convert into calls, form fills, or sales isn’t proof SEO is failing — but it is a sign to look at the page itself, not just the ranking. A page that ranks well but has a slow load time, a confusing layout, or no clear next step will leak the traffic SEO worked to earn.
A quick monthly check
- Is organic traffic to your core service or product pages trending up over 3+ months, not just one month?
- Are you ranking for terms someone would actually search before buying, not just broad industry terms?
- Are impressions growing for your target keywords, even if clicks haven’t caught up yet?
- Are leads or sales attributed to organic search trending in the same direction as traffic?
- Have technical basics — site speed, mobile usability, broken links — been checked in the last quarter?
If most of those are trending the right way, your SEO is working even if it doesn’t feel dramatic month to month — that’s normal for a channel that compounds over time. If several are flat or declining, that’s a more useful conversation to have with whoever runs your SEO than “why aren’t we #1 yet.”
